The Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber (also known as the M1862 as this was when the first 800 were issued) is a long sword made of steel and brass, used by US cavalry from the American Civil War until the end of the Indian wars; some were still in use during the Spanish–American War.
This Model 1860 light cavalry saber has very few markings on it. The only discernible markings are an “S.” on the ricasso, and a “170” or “179” on the back side of the guard. See photos. The blade is overall in excellent condition, with a few nicks along the edge. The scabbard is marked with a “4” in silver paint.
